Definition
Inflammation of the breast
Common in breastfeeding women
Aetiology
Mastitis results by spread of infection by the patient's hands or those of others or from a breastfed infant with an oral, eye or skin infection
Spread by blood from an infective focus like boils elsewhere in the body.
Pathology
Infection of the ducts - milk stagnates in the lobules - pain - nipple discharges purulent material, serum or blood
Clinical Features
Nipple cracks or abrasions noted
Breast skin reddened
Tenderness +
Systemic signs : fever, tachycardia
Treatment
A broad-spectrum antibiotic prescribed for 7 to 10 days
A snug bra worn
Personal hygient improved
Adequate rest
Adequate hydration
Complication
Breast abscess - I & D needed - Culture & sensitivity done - antibiotics
